The Attorney General Give an Update on the Maya Rights Land Case

Meanwhile, six years ago in April 2015, the Maya Leaders Alliance and twenty-three other villages entered into a consent order with the Government of Belize. At the center of the Consent Order is the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent Protocol. The CCJ has for some time been expecting that a working document establishing this protocol be produced. It didn’t happen under the UDP Government and it still has not yet happened under this PUP government. We asked Attorney General Magali Marin Young for an update.

Magali Marin Young, Attorney General: “There are several things that need to be worked on and I believe Minister Dolores who is the Minister of Indigenous Affairs is working on developing a free prior and informed consent protocol. She has engaged in consultations with the stakeholders and I believe that she will be putting before the court a proposed draft of the FPIC.”
