Yesterday we told you of the press release sent out by the Citrus Growers Association, dispelling the reports made on Channel Five of a collapsing citrus industry. The release basically stated that there is no imminent collapse and the report is misleading. Last week, Channel Five stated that the industry was on hanging on by a thin thread, and teetering on the brink of failure, despite being assisted by the government. Well, it turns out that the industry is nowhere near collapse and has been improving over the last year. The association says that with some assistance from the government, it has been making meaningful strides to rebound from the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Eccelston Irving, Chairman of the BCGA, told Love News that it was imperative to provide an accurate picture of the industry’s status.
Irving added that while the government has provided aid to citrus farmers, he believes more can be done to protect the vital industry from various outside factors hindering its continued progression.
