While the country’s active COVID-19 cases continue to grow, the Belize Central Prison has managed to prevent any new cases, and have been Covid free for several months now. The prison had received donations of several personal protective gears and supplies from the Caribbean Community Implementing Agency for Crime and Security last year. However, the stocks of these PPE’s are slowly being exhausted and now leaves the question of how protected are inmates from the COVID-19 virus. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Kolbe Foundation, Virgilio Murillo said the prison’s containment of the virus is something he can boast about.
Virgilio Murillo, CEO, Kolbe Foundation: “I continue to brag and boast that the prison has no active COVID-19 cases and that was galvanized even yesterday because yesterday we had some illegal immigrants who are being deported today and one of the criteria is to present a COVID negative test and when we swabbed fifteen of them the day before, the results came back yesterday and all of them were COVID free. So I don’t know that I need to justify or defend that situation any more than what happened yesterday.”
CEO Murillo noted that despite prisons being breathing grounds for such viruses the protocols set in place have proven to be effective in curbing the spread of COVID-19.
