The Belize Port Authority (BPA) has issued a clarification regarding the presence of a foreign vessel in Belizean waters today. According to the BPA, approval was granted for the offshore support vessel M/V Tehuana to make a scheduled administrative call to a port in Belize. Authorities stress that the visit is strictly administrative in nature and does not involve any commercial activity. The BPA explains that the vessel will not load or unload cargo, conduct trade, or provide services while in Belize. The administrative call is being made to allow the vessel to comply with legal requirements to depart Mexican waters while its documentation is processed. The M/V Tehuana is a Mexican-flagged offshore support and supply vessel, and the Port Authority notes that its presence in Belizean waters is fully in keeping with international maritime law and established port procedures. As a coastal and port state, Belize is obligated to facilitate lawful port calls, subject to appropriate controls and restrictions. The Belize Port Authority further assured the public that the vessel’s movements are being closely monitored by relevant maritime authorities, and that no activities beyond those expressly authorized will be permitted while the vessel remains within Belizean jurisdiction. The BPA says the notice was issued in the interest of transparency, and to prevent misinformation or unnecessary public concern surrounding the vessel’s presence.
