The BPA says Jose Castro’s fatal injuries were self-inflicted

According to the Acting Port Commissioner, Darlin Gaitan, the BPA’s investigation into a similar boating incident that claimed the life of a Caye Caulker resident is also being finalized. Earlier this month, 49-year-old Jose Castro, a father of four, was spearfishing off the coast of Caye Caulker when he was reportedly injured by his fishing boat. The fisherman received chop wounds to his leg and died while being treated at sea by persons passing by. Gaitan says that the evidence collected indicates that Castro’s injuries were indeed inflicted by his vessel.

Darlin Gaitan, Acting Ports Commissioner: “That is a very similar incident because it was a chopping incident from a propeller and that is still a very fresh investigation and we have reports from the police department as to why they gathered initially as well and that seems to be pointing to self injury as well.”
