The BPD Elects New Executive Body for Police Association

The Belize Police Department has elected a new executive body for the Belize Police Association. Elections were held yesterday and the slate led by Sergeant Jermaine Hyde was triumphant. Hyde alongside, Sergeants Gilbert Martinez and William Usher, Corporals Sherlene Myers, Reina Mendoza, Pedro Romero, and Constable Lorenzo Mendoza will now serve as the executive body for a year. The election however saw a very low turnout with only an estimated six hundred officers coming out to vote from an estimated two thousand that were eligible. The media questioned former Chairman, Sergeant Jermaine Hyde on whether the low turnout was a result of the elections being announced late and if it signaled a loss of confidence in the association. This was his response.

Hyde’s slate had campaigned on promises of promoting police welfare through a collaboration with Minister Natural Resources Cordel Hyde to provide land for officers. According to Sergeant Hyde, efforts in this regard are already on the way.
