The Department of Youth Services holds spelling bee Port Loyola

In an effort to tackle crime in Belize City the Department of Youth Services (DYS) has launched an Alternative to Violence Program (AVP). The initiative is a collaboration between residents of marginalized communities, the DYS, and the National Community for Family and Children (NCFC). Today, as a part of the program the Port AVP Innovators held a spelling bee competition for youth in the Jane Usher area. Youth Officer at DYS, Rafael Roberts, shared more details about the event.

Treasurer of the Port AVP Innovators, Corretta Apolonio, says that the group was formed four months ago and has various members from the Port area. According to her, the spelling bee is geared at keeping the youth engaged during the summer vacation.

All participants of the competition will be receiving a bag pack with schools supplies.
