This next story is not a usual occurrence in Belize. If it is, then it is often times kept private. But, over the weekend we learnt of a young Belizean couple who was capitalizing on the death of a newborn baby claiming the child to be theirs when it was actually for their neighbor. It is like a script from a lifetime movie but in this instance, it is not fiction. Love News spoke with the baby’s mother who learnt that pictures of her baby were being circulated on social media. 32-year-old Eve Banks gave birth to her son in March 2019 but lost the child three weeks later. Recently, however, Banks found that one of her neighbours was lying to her in-laws saying that the baby was hers and that she had lost the baby. The neighbor, according to Banks, even posted the pictures of the baby on Facebook. The entire situation began unfolded over the weekend when one of Banks’ family friends brought it to her attention.
Eze Banks, Aggrieved Mother: “Sometime between Saturday she contacted us the family and was informing us about it and that’s when everything started to unfold and confirmation came through. Then other dialogues came that supported full evidence that they were using all the photos that she definitely retracted from my Facebook account since the young lady and I are mutual friends given that she is also a neighbor. After informing my mother she then told me but I wasn’t paying it any mind at first but later on it started to play a mind game or it took an emotional turn because then I found out that he was being passed off as new birth date, new death date, new name and everything that she posted or shared with us was from the individual’s mother, the dialogues between them talking about how the baby had congenital heart disease and lot of diagnosis including one point they had pictures of the funeral, him in the coffin, they also had photos of when my child was on oxygen inside the KHMH.”
Banks reportedly confronted the couple who lied about being the baby’s parents. According to Banks, the couple was trying to get in the good graces of the husband’s mother and immediate relatives.
Eze Banks, Aggrieved Mother: “The entire long and short or her reason behind it or behind both of their reasons were to make amends with family. They were trying to become a more closely knit family with the young man’s mother. The matriarchal side was not one to boast on, they didn’t have a good relationship and they assumed that this would bring them close together.”
While the couple did not seek to gain financially through this deception it is yet to be ascertained if the couple could be criminally charged. According to Banks she just wants her baby to rest in peace.
