The FCD Says the Chiquibul Forest Remains Under Constant Threat

The FCD is also working to ensure that the Chiquibul Forest maintains its environmental integrity and is free from threats. One of those threats is gold panning. Executive Director Rafael Manzanero says that trans-border gold panning on the Chiquibul headwaters has been a constant problem. The ruggedness of the terrain and remoteness makes enforcement complicated and difficult. Manzanero says that FCD together with other agencies will be reviewing the strategies and devise more effective interventions.

Rafael Manzanero, Executive Director, FCD: “Gold panning has always been an ongoing issue. It is also a chronic one, it has never stopped from the time we first registered that in 2011. So the gold panning has always been there only in the southern region of Chiquibul and we always had acknowledged that these individuals already knew how to do gold panning also because they had been doing so in their country for even previous years before we started to register it here in Belize.”
