The FDA Approves Booster Shots for Selected COVID-19 Vaccines

Also on the COVID front: there has so far been no definitive timeline on if and/or when Belizeans will get booster shots for the coronavirus, but in the United States, it is being rolled out soon. Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration greenlighted COVID-19 booster shots for Americans who have received the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines. In its announcement, the FDA also indicated that it will allow Americans to mix and match their booster shots, which means, some Americans may receive a different COVID-19 vaccine from the one they received. The New York Times reports that this announcement may dampen interest in Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine, which studies have found provides less protection than Modern or Pfizer. Providers will have the option of offering a Moderna or Pfizer booster, which could trigger a more substantial jump in protective antibodies. The regulators, who already authorized boosters for high-risk Pfizer recipients last month, did not recommend any one vaccine over another as a booster. They also remained silent on whether it is preferable to stick with the same vaccine when possible.
