Over the weekend, residents in Caye Caulker Village were up in arms when an image surfaced online showing a woman and a man placing a starfish into a plastic bag. The issue sparked outrage not only from the residents but from the environmental community too. According to the Fisheries Department, the persons broke the law simply by taking the sea star out of the water. Marine Reserves Operations Manager, Alicia Eck-Nunez, says that once caught these perpetrators could have faced up to a thousand dollars in fines.
