The Immigration Department has announced a shift in its regime to deal with migrants who require visitors’ permits. For example, individuals who came into Belize legally and require an extension on a visitor permit to remain in the country will be regularized if they could not do so between April 2020 and September 2021. Starting October 1, a special period to enable those people to complete their regularization process will begin; that process however ends on December 31. Those individuals will pay 100 dollars to apply and their extension fees from March 2020 to September 2021 will be waived. At the same time, the Ministry says that fees will apply for the period before March 2020. That fee is fifty dollars per month for the first six months and one hundred dollars thereafter, as per S.I. Forty-Two of 2005. During this special period, migrants who seek to regularize themselves can take use the time as a prerequisite to apply for permanent residence. As per the S.I., the regularization process will run alongside the current fee structure for all other migrants.
