Elections Day is set for November 11, but there are those who have registered before September 11 who still won’t be able to vote. There are also those who had transferred from one division to another who will just have to sit this one out. This is because there are several objections before the court whose registration or transfer has been deemed illegal. The Standard Bearer for Dangriga, Dr Louis Zabaneh, has been doing his part to ensure that the voting list for his constituency is free of illegal transfer. He stated that he has taken the matter to court.
Dr.Louis Zabaneh, PUP Standard Bearer, Dangriga: “We went to court twice. We had the July numbers and then we had the August numbers. In the July numbers actually Elections and Boundaries disallowed about twenty three persons who transferred illegally and we had a whole list of people objecting. When we did go to court there was a technicality because the court sat pass the fifth day of the subsequent month which was of course August. In the case of this last one for the numbers of transfers in August unfortunately like many many constituencies we were unable to get the court to agree with us that twenty seven people transferred in illegally from other places. I believe we have to have major amendments to the Representation of People Act, it is important that we amend that act to also have fines for the operatives, the operatives who are bringing in these people, we have penalties for people who transfer- this has never been put into effect. We certainly need to have better ways for us to ensure that when a person says they moved to a division they actually live there for example maybe giving utility bills when they go to do the transfer to prove that they actually live where they say they live so I think we need to have major revision and amendments to the act.”
The Belize Progressive Party also commented on the matter stating that the final list of those that have transferred has not been released to them as yet.
Patrick Rogers, Party Leader, Belize Progressive Party: “The problem with the re-registration exercise and with Elections and Boundaries are they punking us Mr.Chairman ? Because up to today- I’m being real- they always try to give us to the run around we should have had our updates from the transfer and election has been called Belize and yet the BPP has not gotten their list as yet. As I said we don’t like holler that they are moving the goal post on us but it certainly feels that the goal post has been moved us that election has been announced and they haven’t given us the list of the transfer. My polling captains for the polling areas when they go around checking you find that people have already transferred, they still reside in Pickstock but they no longer register in Pickstock they’ve been transferred to some other division and then there are people now registered in Pickstock that I can’t find until I get the list to know who they are. So yes we’ve been handicapped with a little over a month to go to election and I don’t know that they’re playing games with us Mr.Chairman?”
