The search for 8-year-old Luke Hanson was suspended just after five o’clock this evening. Today, the Belize Search and Rescue Team (BSART), the Belize Coast Guard (BCG), villagers of Roaring Creek, and other volunteers searched the Belize River for hours in hopes of finding the minor. Head of the BCG’s Dive Unit, Chief Petty Officer Tyrone Edwards, says that the team will now be hoping to find the minor when his body surfaces from the river’s bed. He says that tomorrow’s search will be a bit different and will cover a larger area of the river.
CPO Tyrone Edwards, Dive Unit, Belize Coast Guard: “At this point in time because if you can see the river has strong currents definitely the body is moving if it’s not stuck somewhere. So we combed as far as we can go because what affects the body as well is the temperature of the river. The river is cold. If we don’t find anything today then we will be here tomorrow morning again searching which by tomorrow the body should float up already and more than likely if there’s branches and st stuff along the river banks then it could get hooked up there so searching tomorrow is the main thing. Probably no diving will take place it’s just search, comb as far as we can comb you know it’s a small person so it will move faster than a larger person in the river. It gets dark about 4:30/5:00 around here so about that time we will depart from here and come back in the morning.”
