The U.S. Embassy Partners to Host High-Level Virtual Discussion on Ocean Conservation

U.S. Embassy Belmopan, the Global Fishing Watch (GFW), Oceana Belize, and the Belize High Seas Fisheries Unit (BHSFU) hosted a high-level virtual discussion. The session was on ocean conservation and harnessing new technologies to counter illegal fishing activities in Belize. Titled “Fishing for the Future: Belize’s Commitment to Fighting Illegal Fishing with Big Data,” the event featured remarks from U.S. expert and GFW Product Development Director Anna Sanders; Oceana Belize Vice President Janelle Chanona, and BHSFU Deputy Director Robert Robinson. Sanders’ participation was made possible through the U.S. State Department’s U.S. Speaker Program. The event comes after the unit signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Oceana and GFW to make vessel-tracking data publicly available through the Global Fishing Watch map. This technology tracks the movement of commercial fishing vessels in near real-time to better detect and prevent illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and to support monitoring enforcement measures.
