This weekend will see the third week of Village Council Elections. In the first week of the elections, the villages aligned with the People’s United Party (PUP) claimed wide victory. The Leader of the Opposition, Moses “Shyne” Barrow, stated that PUP is not the only one claiming victory as they have been successful in maintaining alignment with most of the villages they had in 2019, despite the PUP deeply affiliating themselves with the running councils. The Chairman of the UDP, Michael Peyrefitte, says that despite the circumstances, the party is performing well.
Michael Peyrefitte, Chairman: “We have had villages where total, all UDP, Chan Chen, Sittee River, a number of them that just gone, sent a message to the government, but we’re not satisfied. We want more villages to say to the Government that they are not satisfied with what they are doing. You could back, you could back your candidates who you want but they shouldn’t be running officially with no party affiliation but the PUP have made no qualms or they have no shame about that. But we don’t care. We like that we know who we’re running against and who’s affiliated with who.”
