While the entire nation is focused on the COVID-19 situation, business continues in various areas including politics.  With the deadline approaching for applications to be submitted for the UDP leadership, the party’s Secretariat has received five applications from well-known UDP members.  Up to March 20, we had seen three applications submitted by namely, Omar Figueroa, Patrick Faber, and John Saldivar.  Within the last 24 hours, our newsroom has gotten reports of two more applications reaching the Secretariat from former UDP Mayor, Darrell Bradley and the current Foreign Affairs Minister, Wilfred Sedi Elrington.  Reports coming out of the UDP camp indicate that with the majority of Cabinet members still against Faber’s candidacy, the unexpected applications are a ploy to take away votes from Faber, putting him at a disadvantage.  Saldivar had initially called on Faber to tow the Figueroa line or else he (Saldivar) will run again.  Faber refused and by the day’s end, Saldivar was back in the race again.  With Prime Minister Dean Barrow retiring from party politics, the UDP is required to find a successor before the next general election which could be held any time before February 2021.
