Thirty Students Gifted with Medical Scholarships Out West

An estimated thirty Belizeans were awarded with medical scholarships this morning in Belmopan. The event came about through a collaboration between the Belmopan City Council and the American Northwest University established in Belize with an office in Chicago, Illinois, USA. According to the Mayor of Belmopan, Sharon Palacio, the Belmopan City Council is already looking into additional scholarships under various programmes.

Sheran “Sharon” Palacio, Mayor of Belmopan: “It’s a medical school right here in Belmopan and we worked hard in advocating that these young people be awarded scholarships. So we have about ten with full scholarships and we have about twenty plus who will be receiving ninety percent funding. And myself as the mayor I’m committed to this process because I believe in education and as the vote of thanks councilor Amahdi said a while ago it is something that can never be taken away from you and I personally see it as a need especially when it comes to medicine because these are people that we need in our societies and can you imagine some of them go on to become specialists, surgeons and so on and so forth. So term the day a historic blessing for the Belmopan City Council.”

Fem Cruz, Cayo Correspondent: How did the council come about selecting those blessed students?

Sheran “Sharon” Palacio, Mayor of Belmopan: “They all applied. We at City Hall we took over the entire management of the school and I have a very competent city administrator who quickly jumped on board with me and we sent out the information, we advertised and we had all these young people apply and they had no knowledge that it was gonna be funded to this extent.”

Reporter: Will other scholarships be given maybe in different areas ?

Sheran “Sharon” Palacio, Mayor of Belmopan: “Definitely there will be expansion. I wouldn’t be able to speak about it right now. I believe in taking one step at a time and I will call you all as we move on. I consider the media our partners and you are an integral part of this process. This is for all of us, Plus TV, Love FM we’re grateful.”

Speaking on behalf of the American Northwest University was Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mystery Furtado. In her interview with our Cayo Correspondents, Furtado noted that as part of the study programme there will be clinical rotations in Chicago.

As for the accreditation of the university, Love News understands that they are currently in the process of obtaining the accreditation from Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions. They are also applying to be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland and to be recognized by the Educational Commission on Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) for students to sit for the USMLE and to facilitate admission into a residency programs in the United States.
