Threats Against Opposition Leader Taken Seriously

Leader of the Opposition, Moses “Shyne” Barrow, has been advised by the Commissioner of Police Chester Williams to be careful of his movements after public threats of violence were made against him. In the wake of last week’s murder of a well-known street figure, Alrick “Ricky” Smith, someone issued threats against Barrow in a post which was circulating on Facebook. According to the ComPol, Barrow has since been contacted and the police’s cybercrime unit is investigating the matter.

Chester Williams, Commissioner, Belize Police Department: “Certainly yes, we, I saw the threat. Many persons sent it to me and I’m grateful for that. I reached out to the Hon. Shyne Barrow personally and told him of it and I asked him to be extra careful in terms of how he moves around. I know he’s not in the county right now because he told me that yesterday but whenever he returns I expect that he will be careful as to where he goes and how he goes and be more vigilant of where he goes. In the meantime, we are looking at the post. We have contacted Facebook. The Cyber Crime Unit is engaged and we’re trying to identify the person who made those posts containing those threats.”
