A number of non-fatal shootings occurred over this weekend. One of them happened in Belize City, on Courtney’s Crescent on Saturday at 6pm. The victim, 35-year-old Jareth Jerry Jones, was hospitalized but is currently in a stable condition. According to Superintendent Alejandro Cowo Jones is known to police.
Supt.Alejandro Cowo, Head of Crimes Investigation Branch, Belize City Police Department: “What police gather so far is that Mr.Jones was walking on Courtney’s Crescent heading towards his home when he was approached by a male person who fired shots at him causing the injuries to him. We know that there have been a number of incidents in that area so we believe it is connected to the other shootings that have happened there last week.”
Reporter: So was he the intended target?
Supt.Alejandro Cowo, Head of Crimes Investigation Branch, Belize City Police Department: “Well at the moment he was the only person on the street.”
There were two shooting incidents in the Corozal District which according to Superintendent Cowo may be connected. The first occurred on Thursday at 11:30pm.
Supt.Alejandro Cowo, Head of Crimes Investigation Branch, Belize City Police Department: “Mr.Samuel Matura,42 years, reported to the police that he had just arrived at his address and as he was about to park his vehicle he saw a male person coming towards him who fired several shots at his direction. He managed the drive up to the police station where he was assisted and taken to the Corozal Community Hospital where he was treated and discharged. He received injuries to his left thumb and a graze to the body. Since then he reported that he knows who was the person and as a result a male person by the name of Michael Hugh Franklin, 19 years, was detained and on Friday he was arrested and charged for the crime of attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm and dangerous harm.
Yesterday at about minutes to five Vanessa Matus, 35 -year-old Belizean of a Toucan Street address reported that whilst she was leaving from that address she observed a male person who she knows riding a bicycle. As the male person approached her he came off his bicycle and fired several shots at her direction. She managed to drive away from there and thereafter made a report to the police. She escaped unhurt. The person who she mentioned that she knows has been detained and I believe that he will be charged sometime this evening. We believe that both incidents are related as it is an ongoing dispute that they have in that area.“
20-year-old Edwin Marin was arrested and charged today for Matus’ shooting.
