Three of the five dozen persons arrested and charged over the weekend were for Entering Belize Illegally. Since the beginning of the State of Emergency, entry into Belize was prohibited from Non-Belizeans and Belizeans. In the New Statutory Instrument #62, the Government recognized that persons have been illegally crossing into Belize, Now these persons will be arrested and charged for the offense. Over the weekend two persons in the North and one person in the south were caught illegally crossing.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: When it comes to persons who enter the country illegally there is absolutely no room for negotiation where they are concerned. As far as I see it when they do that they put our entire country at risk. Now going back to the video you spoke about I observed on social media people querying but that they saw four but why only two got arrested ? Yes four persons came but two were minors and two were adults. The two adults were the parents of the minors. We can’t charge the minor because the parent is bringing them because they are following their parents and so only the two parents were charged. Now the law is clear there is absolutely no room for discretion where the Ministry of Health is concerned in terms of ensuring that these people go into mandatory quarantine. And so the parents are still in police custody they will be going to court today. By virtue of the law if they were to plea guilty they’ll be sentenced to three months imprisonment but can they go directly to prison ? The answer is no. So even before they go to prison they would have to undergo the twenty one day quarantine starting from the day when they were found and if after the twenty one days they do not develop symptoms or test positive then they can go to prison. In terms of the two children now they were placed in mandatory quarantine for the twenty one days. So if it is that the parents should plead not guilty and the court were to grant them bail they will not go home they should go directly into mandatory quarantine at their expense and this is something that we must be extremely harsh with so the message can be sent to people “do not enter this country illegally.”. Now even when it comes to persons who come in legally they too must go into mandatory quarantine and from a law enforcement standpoint we are doing our best to ensure that everybody who enters this country legally or illegally that they follow the law, there is no room for negotiation where that is concerned. We also had a young lady who was caught on Friday coming across the border illegally as well she too was charged and should be in mandatory quarantine at this time so we’re catching them.”
This measure is a tactic to avoid contamination from Our neighbors in Mexico and Guatemala into our Country, as they continue to have a spike in cases and deaths.
