Three Belize City residents, including an elderly man, were injured in a shooting incident on Sunday night. Around eight-thirty, 60-year-old Steven Hope, 34-year-old Carmen Canelo, and 31-year-old Michael Usher were standing in front of the entrance of an apartment building on Handyside Street. While the group was socializing, they were approached by two men on a motorcycle one of whom opened fire. The shots caught Hope and Canelo to the body while Usher was grazed to his elbow. According to Police Press Officer, ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, investigators believe that the shooting may be gang-related.
ASP. Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations, Belize Police Department: “We know that Hope and Armin Cano were admitted in stable condition but Michael Usher refused to get any medical treatment for his graze that he received during this incident. We know that the motorcycle riders then made good their escape into Daly Street and the police are still looking to try to identify these persons that we know are responsible for this , the orchestrator of this crime. We know that there is an ongoing rivalry between the people of that neighborhood where the shooting occurred and another nearby group and we know that the mediation unit will be addressing that situation today hopefully for us to establish what spiked this to occur.”
