Tilapia Fingerlings In Quarantine After Being Affected by Bacteria

Fish at the Tilapia Hatchery in Central Farm, Cayo are being affected by bacteria. A unit of fingerlings in are in quarantine and some have died. Allegedly, the infection is caused by bacteria that came from the recent rains. And, since the ponds do not have a pump to filter the water to maintain a good flow of clean water supply, the water got contaminated. Love News understands that the Ministry of Agriculture is already looking into the situation to keep it under control. Today we spoke with Agriculture Minister, Jose Mai, who explained briefly.

Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise: “What you had was a mortality in our tilapia farm at Central  Farm but I’m told by technicians when they did their analysis they found a bacteria that had caused the mortality so we had to apply certain treatment to the water. What we found out we understand is because of the source of water we are using we were pumping water from the river and because of the intense rain in the area a lot of runoff into the rivers there seems to have been contamination.”
