2-year-old Ouresmae August is currently going through an ordeal that no toddler should have to face. She has been in and out of hospitals after she was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome. This means that too much protein is passed in the urine, and it is caused by damage to the clusters of small blood vessels in the kidneys that filter waste and excess water from the blood. Baby Ouresmae started seeing symptoms about a month and a half ago. The toddler’s aunt, Michelle Henderson, spoke to us today about how this disease affects Oursemae’s everyday life.
Baby Ouresmae is put on a strict no-salt diet and cannot eat certain fruits. She needs to take her medication on time and wear a mask whenever she leaves home. Her family has plans to travel abroad for treatment, and will be holding fundraisers over the next few weeks.
Michelle Henderson, Aunt of Ouresmae: “They have been telling us that we need to do a biopsy and that we have to do that abroad. So we’re trying very hard to raise funds. This weekend we’ll be having a dinner in Caye Caulker, a turkey dinner sale to raise funds for her. Most of our fundraisers are going to be food wise. We’re doing one this weekend, one next weekend and the following weekend we’re trying to do one. Some people can’t buy the food but they’re donating cash and are sending it into an account and they’re saying this is what we can donate and we appreciate whatever. If she has to go to Virginia it’s quite over $10,000 Belize or maybe more because the mother is required to pay for her visa, she is required to pay for her plane ticket, both plane tickets, both visas. The hospital in Virginia is only going to take care of the medications. We are trying to get the help of the World Pediatric Project and they have told us that they will see how much help they can give, they have taken the application and they have said they will try and see if they could help but at the same time us as a family we are trying to do what we can do on our own. We are planning within the next month because we don’t want to take anything for granted.
If you would like to donate to Baby Ouresmae’s cause, their Atlantic Bank account is under the name Orrie August and the number is 210879744. The family’s phone number is 625-8987.
