Toledo District Residents Alerted to Potential Landslides Due to Increased Rainfall

Landslides are not common in Belize, but according to Belize Hydrology Services, it could become a norm in the country.  Just last week, residents of the Toledo District were cautioned to be on the alert for landslides.  One major contributing factor for this is the rain waters coming down in neighboring Guatemala through the mountainous terrain into Belize.  Tennille Hendy, the Principal Hydrologist, explained that aside from landslides there are several advisories including possible flooding and water contamination.

Tennille Williams-Hendy, Principal Hydrologist: “Toledo district is poised to be the most impacted by climate change. So I can say to some extent we’re starting to see some of the effects of climate change with the wildfires and the droughts that we’re having. So really we’re in both stages at once trying to get our bearings at the same time you know address these water issues that we’re having. Additionally we could be looking at landslides in Belize, that’s something that we hear about these other countries having landslides, but in Belize it’s not something native to us. Yes, we know there’s a possibility we have high mountains but we also have to look at how we’re occupying those spaces and compounded with the forest fires burning and most of the trees burning to their roots. We have rock falls that have happened before and for the first time in Belize we’ve had a landslide threat showing up on our systems. So we can look forward to a lot of things that we were not used to before. They will now become normal to us as hurricanes and floods are to us.”
