Toledo East Prepares for Bi-election Following Mike Espat’s Passing

The passing of Area Representative Mike Espat has set in motion, plans for a bi-election in the Toledo East constituency.  This would mark the second bi-election under the John Briceno administration with the first being for the Corozal Bay division in 2021 when David Dido Vega had lost his battle with Covid-19.  As it relates to the process for a bi-election, our newsroom has confirmed with the Chief Elections Officer that the now-vacant seat must be filled by July 23 this year.  This deadline will coincide with a portion of the transfer period where registered voters can move their votes to another division.  It will also allow new voters to register by Nomination Day to vote in the bi-election.  It is yet to be determined when Nomination Day will be as it is up to the Governor General to issue a writ on the date.  It is to be noted, however, that the date for the bi-election has to be anywhere between 15 to 21 days after nomination day.  Incidentally, even prior to Espat’s death, discussions were already being had to inject new and younger blood into the Toledo East division.  As a matter of fact, even Espat was contemplating support for his son, Melhem Espat, to follow in his footsteps.  Love News spoke with the minister’s brother, Luke Espat, who confirmed his nephew’s interest.

Luke Espat, Brother of Michael Espat: “I had a chat with his son who has worked with him all this life, his adult life that is. And he has indicated to me he will throw his hat into public politics. So I congratulated him and wish him well. But I think he has the character of his father. He has worked the area. He knows it well. And I think the people will respect that he will continue the hard work and commitment not on a personal level but on the level that the people come first and you know he truly believes in the fundamentals of the People’s United Party.”

Aside from Melhem Espat, Ray Coleman of Punta Gorda as well as CEO Dr. Osmond Martinez have expressed interest in electoral politics in Toledo East.  Just a few days ago, Senator Bevin Cal took to social media alluding to an interest to throw his hat in the political ring for Toledo East.  According to Brother Luke, whoever gets to represent Toledo East will have to be as tenacious as Mike was for his people.

Luke Espat, Brother of Michael Espat: “As you know Mike is a very tenacious worker. Has been in politics, he started to work with the PUP in ’86 and then ran for political office in ’89, from then to now. So one of the longest serving members of parliament and he died working for the people. So without a doubt it’s a shocking issue but life goes on and I think whoever comes up will have to match up to the work that he did.”

We will keep an eye on the developments of the imminent bi-election.
