Tourism stakeholders brace for Tropical Storm Lisa

The Ministry of Tourism is also meeting with stakeholders to discuss possible steps that would lessen the storm’s impact on the industry. In recent weeks, Hurricane Julia, which made landfall in Nicaragua, negatively impacted several businesses in Belize’s tourism sector. The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) conducted assessments to determine the level of damage and say that businesses were only affected by the cancellation of bookings. According to Minister of Tourism, Anthony Mahler, Tropical Storm Lisa is having a similar effect on the industry.

Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism: “Well we had a meeting with BTIA this morning their board of directors and we’ll continue to have dialogue with the industry but we expect to have some cancellation in flights, from the cruise sector we have had a cancelation already and we expect more to come as the storm comes closer to Belize but all we can do is to have our people be as prepared as possible and to hunker down.”
