The Statistical Institute of Belize’s latest report showed that tourism was responsible for driving the economy. The Belize Tourism Board concurred that finding with their latest statistics released for the first half of the year. The numbers show that tourism arrivals to Belize continue on a consistent upward trend at groundbreaking levels. For the month of June, overnight tourists’ arrivals increased by fifteen percent. Furthermore, for the past three years, there has been an increase of at least ten percent. Over the past six years, June and July arrivals were close in comparison to the high season numbers of January and February. In addition, there was a 17% accumulative increase in overnight arrivals for the first half of the year. Cruise arrivals also recorded an increase of 57.2% or over 26,000, when compared to June 2017. In June 2018, there was a total of twenty cruise ship calls amounting to over 73,000 cruise passengers arriving in Belize. At the end of the first half of the year, there has been an overall increase of 10.2% in cruise visitors when compared to the first half of 2017. BTB attributes the increase in tourists’ arrivals to their marketing strategies.
