Tourists Robbed at Gunpoint in Western Belize: Police Launch Investigation

A group of tourists was tied up and robbed in the wee hours of today in western Belize. Just after midnight, 35-year-old Robert Speckman was ambushed by six men dressed in camouflage while sleeping inside a tent at the Oasis Camping Site. Speckman says the men, armed with a firearm and machetes, ransacked his tent and tied up him and a worker, who was sleeping in a nearby hammock. The assailants then targeted another tent and tied up British nationals, 29-year-old Beth Paull and 30-year-old Nicholas Russell Lonsdale. The men then stole several electronics valued at several hundred dollars before escaping on foot. The men reportedly wore masks over their faces and used headlights. Police are seeking numerous suspects.
