Tracy Panton Adds King’s Counsel to Legal Team Amid UDP Leadership Battle

And while Panton showed up at the first court case without counsel, today, she was armed with a cadre of attorneys, including King’s Counsel Attorney Peter Knox. The British Attorney is now Panton’s lead attorney, which has many questioning whether Panton has a new supporter. Last month, Panton appeared unrepresented and alone, with only the Alliance’s Chairwoman Sheena Pitts appearing as amicus, which meant her role was to assist with the law’s interpretation. Well, today, Panton’s new attorney led to the press questioning whether she now has the support of the Ashcroft Alliance. But, her attorney Sheena Pitts, strongly denied that notion. 

Reporter: When we see the presence of Mr. Knox, who we know is a very highly regarded British King’s Council, I’m asking from a political perspective now, is he retained in alliance with the Ashcroft Alliance because whenever we see white man attorney in Belize he’s the only person who could afford to bring white man attorney to Belize. I’m sorry because…..

Sheena Pits, Attorney: “Because it’s rather unfortunate that our post-colonial consciousness constrains us that way that we can only think that way and so I cannot be invited to even answer your question. I respectfully decline the invitation, but I will say categorically that there has been no collusion, connivance. There has been no assistance lent by any other, in your terms, “white man” to secure counsel we have who so happens to be from the UK and also white.”

Pitts added that Knox is permitted to practice law in Belize.
