Minister of Investment, Trade and Commerce, Tracy Taegar Panton, has stated that she will be running for the position of First Deputy Party Leader for the United Democratic Party. Taegar has decided to run for the position when the party calls its National Convention in February 2020. Taegar is the area representative for the Albert Constituency, in Belize City. Taegar will be the first woman to run for the position. According to Tracy Taegar, she is running for the position in order to represent women and children at a higher level of government.
Tracy Taegar-Panton, Area Representative for Albert Division: “My decision was really premised on the encouragement I have received from Belizeans countrywide to take a more meaningful role and to make a stand in terms of the leadership of our political institutions in this country. So I believe that from the feedback and support and encouragement I have that it would have been hard to dismiss that and it would have been hard not to have taken that into consideration. It’s not an easy vote for women, there is a reason that there are only two elected women officials in government but how are we going to change the game if we are not willing to put ourselves out there in a way that our male colleagues can respect, that our male colleagues can take us seriously. I am under no illusion that it will be an easy journey, we need to come to the table in a meaningful way and I pledge certainly to the women of the United Democratic Party and to women and young people all over this country that I will work very tirelessly to be an advocate for the issues that concern them and that need to be addressed at the highest level of government.”
To date, Taegar is the only candidate running for the position of UDP Deputy Party Leader.
