Tracy Panton says GOB should move quicker to implement minimum despite it not being enough

Albert Area Representative, Tracy Panton, agrees that a five dollar minimum wage is not enough. Panton says that despite five dollars being a drop in the bucket, Government needs to act quicker on this issue.

Tracy Panton, Area Representative, Albert Division: I really unclear as to why there has been such a delay in implementing the five dollar minimum wage. I am sure that commitment made by the then member of the opposition was not made in isolation. I’m sure they did their studies, there must have been some kind of assessment of what would be necessary and what would be possible before that commitment was made to the Belizean people and so I think I have to support the view of our Leader of the Opposition that indeed five dollars really will not even make a dent in where we are now in terms of dealing with the escalating inflation in this country and also increasing poverty levels in the country and so I would urge that the government moves post haste. This you know I’m sure was not just a pie in the sky. I’m sure they felt very strongly at that time that they could implement such a program as quickly as possible.”
