Trade Union Congress Launches Website and Strategic Plan for Working Class

The National Trade Union Congress of Belize is furthering its work of advocating for the working class, through the launch of its website and five-year strategic plan. The website ntucb.org will be used as a means of providing information to members and affiliates of the congress as well as allowing for greater connectivity of these entities. President of the NTUCB Luke Martinez says the strategy was developed with the assistance of the International Labor Organization (ILO).

Luis Luke Martinez, President, NTUCB: “We’ve launched our website and we’ve also launched our strategic plan so those are two great milestones or the National Trade Union Congress. The website of course it allows us to take advantage and be a part of the trending AI revolution that is going on. We can’t have AI revolution, artificial intelligence and the National Trade Union Congress doesn’t have a website. We know that these platforms allow us to not only connect with our members locally but we’re able to connect with our regional and global partners so that we could continue to network of course for the benefit of the working class and the trade union movement so that’s huge.”

Dr. Shermayne Saunders, the consultant commissioned by the ILO explained that the new strategic plan adds a new thematic area to the NTUCB’s area of focus, which is the full implementation of the United Nations Convention on Corruption (UNCAC).

Dr.Shermayne Saunders, ILO Consultant: “Was commissioned last year for a period of three months to work on the 2023 to 2028 strategic plan, a five year plan. In addition to that ILO had also commissioned monitoring and evaluation tool and annual implementation plan and also a base signs study to determine how far what the achievements of the previous strategic plan up to 2015 had accomplished. This new strategic plan has strengthen the SWOT analysis. It also had a revision of the mission statement and in addition to the core strategic thematic areas we’ve added an additional one which focuses now on full implementation of the UNCAC as well. So this strategic plan now features eleven strategic thematic areas of focus. The strategic plan is a dynamic plan so there is always an opportunity to constantly update and make the strategic plan current. So this plan because it’s for five years, up to 2028 the NTUCB has identified and they’ve set their goals and the steps that they will accomplish. A lot of it is the ground work, it’s a lot of advocacy, it’s meeting with key bodies in ensuring that the UNCAC gets implemented.”

The NTUCB is the umbrella organization for twelve trade unions which include the Belize National Teacher’s Union (BNTU), Public Service Union (PSU), and Christian Workers Union to name a few.
