Tragedy in Belmopan: Nine-Year-Old Succumbs to Pneumococcal Meningitis After Three-Day Battle
Tonight, a Belmopan family is mourning the loss of a nine-year-old child who spent the last three days fighting for his life. Jayce Brown passed away inside the Intensive Care Unit of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital this afternoon after battling with pneumococcal meningitis. The condition is an infection of the tissue that protects the brain and spinal cord. Brown, a student at United Evergreen Primary School, started showing symptoms of illness on November 30, and on Monday, December 4, he was hospitalized. The Ministry of Health and Wellness confirmed that he was infected by the bacteria streptococcus pneumonia, which caused his condition and that field teams had mobilized to conduct investigations. The teams visited Brown’s family and other close contacts, and his classroom and daycare center were deep cleaned. The Ministry had no official comment today but assured that monitoring exercises were ongoing, and updates would be provided early next week. Notably, a five-year-old determined to be in close contact with Brown is currently being monitored as a suspected case of meningitis.
