Tragedy Strikes in Corozal as Crane Accident Claims One Life, Leaves Another Critical

A man is dead, and another is clinging to life after they fell from a forty-five-foot crane yesterday in Corozal. The men, 46-year-old Julio Zetina and 25-year-old Germain Rivera were working in the parking lot of the Las Vegas Casino near the Corozal Free Zone when tragedy struck. According to reports, the crane basket the men were in snapped from its chain and sent the men crashing to the pavement. Rivera died on the spot, while Zetina was rushed to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Rivera’s common-law-wife, Liannie Yam, says she was upset that after her husband fell to his death, his employers did not inform her of the incident.

Liannie Yam, Common-Law Wife of Deceased: “Well they didn’t inform me. I got to know from other people not from the Casino. Because I was calling and noone answered. I got to know from people not from them.”

Reporter: He was working there how many years ?

Liannie Yam, Common-Law Wife of Deceased: “He just started in September he started at Princess but when the Casino opened they transferred him there. He was working like four months in both casinos.”

Reporter: Have the authorities reached out to you ?
Liannie Yam, Common-Law Wife of Deceased:  “Not really. I got to know from them that he was on the crane, he was inside a basket and the thing from the crane broke or I don’t know what happened. I didn’t really know what happened and the ball that had the crane hit his head and that’s what killed him because the crane was forty five feet tall.”

Rivera was a father of one and a resident of the Corozal District. Yam says her husband was a loving and humble man, who was excited for the upcoming Christmas holiday.

Liannie Yam, Common-Law Wife of Deceased: “He was an excellent dad, an excellent husband. He was everything for us. For me and my daughter. And yeah he was a good person. He was very friendly. Before he went to work we were together with our daughter. He hugged me, he kissed me and said “Babe Christmas is coming and buy our daughter her gift.” and he was very happy because he got off, he wanted to be with us. It is very difficult for us. Super difficult. We had a lot of plans together. We were a young family but we worked very hard for our daughter to have everything. No he’s missing for her.”

The incident is yet another fatal worksite travesty that brings into sharp focus the need for the Occupational Safety and Health Bill.
