Tragic Accident Claims Life of Belize Sugar Industries Employee

While the mill continues to negotiate, it is also mourning the loss of an employee. This morning, Nestor Teck lost his life in a road traffic accident involving an S&B passenger bus and an SUV on the Phillip Goldson Highway. The accident took place at around 6:15 near the Belize Sugar Industries/ American Sugar Refiners (BSI/ASR) junction in the Orange Walk District. Teck, a father of 2 daughters, died on impact after being trapped inside the mangled vehicle. One of the passengers on the bus, Adrian Suarez, spoke to Love News about what he witnessed.

Adrian Svarez, Passenger: “This morning around 6:15 while we were on our way to work in Belize City around Caribbean Tires the driver of the bus was going around 20mph at a normal pace when suddenly I noticed a vehicle was coming in front of the bus. It was a blue Ford Escape. It was already bright outside when the vehicle was coming at a normal speed at first but then approximately at about 20 feet the vehicle picked up speed and caused impact on the bus. In that moment when I saw the vehicle I realized and yelled at the driver “the vehicle will crash !” In that moment the vehicle had already collided with the bus.”

Teck was a mechanic at BSI/ASR since 2015 and was coming off duty at the time of the incident. Suarez believes that he fell asleep behind the wheel.

Adrian Svarez, Passenger: “In my point of view and being a driver I think that the man fell asleep because since some persons reached the accident scene they were from BSI and commented that the man had a night shift at the company and was coming out of work around that time. He clocked out at around 6:15 from work and took that route and I think he fell asleep.”

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
