Tragic Accident Claims Life of Belizean in the Culture Capital: Family Demands Justice

A family in Southern Belize is mourning the loss of a loved one tonight after he was killed in a tragic accident. The victim, 46-year-old Kenrick “Bada” Castillo, was fast asleep when a car came crashing into his home. The incident has left his family heartbroken and demanding justice. Reporter Vejea Alvarez tells us more.

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Broken planks of wood and damaged zinc are all that remain of Kenrick “Bada” Castillo’s home in Dangriga after a vehicle crashed into it on Wednesday night. The 46-year-old was sleeping inside the St. Vincent Street structure when a black Jeep Patriot slammed into it just after 11:30. The impact destroyed Castillo’s house and mortally wounded him. Devon Bermudez, his cousin, had arrived home and witnessed the tragic incident.

Devon Bermudez, Cousin: “Parked my bike in the house. Literally like two minutes or three minutes after that I looked down the street. When I looked down the street I saw a black Jeep Cherokee coming with a ball of speed from across the south side. When it came with a ball of speed it actually jumped the bridge, when it jumped Havana Bridge it lost control. When it lost control I was like “It’s now.” Like literally it was like a movie, it happened too fast. Burst through the house and then ended up on the street.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News:  Police rushed Castillo to the Southern Regional Hospital, but the Dangriga resident died while receiving medical attention. For Castillo’s family, his sudden death is heart-wrenching and vexing because they say it was at the hands of alleged drunk driver.

Devon Bermudez, Cousin: “I don’t know what was this person’s intention or nothing you know but I know this person was under the influence and whatnot. Both of them ran out of the vehicle with the bottle in their hands, Belikin bottles and that is right there that they were drinking and driving and that is under the rules.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: “Bada” was well-known throughout the coastal community, and news of his death drew many condolences. His family described him as being a humble and jovial man.

Thamar Lewis, Relative of Deceased: “Just a nice person around the neighborhood. Everybody knew Bada as Bada. His real name is Kenrick Castillo everybody knows him as Bada around the neighborhood. He is like a handyman to everybody around the neighborhood. This morning everybody came around and everybody was in tears because they know that Bada doesn’t disturb people. He’s a nice person. He will bid you the time of day, he will tell you good morning, good afternoon, good night and whatever so the way he died it was so cruel, it’s sad, it still hurt us. They didn’t stop and render assistance. The neighborhood, the people who came out they ran out and they saw them and they like you know like neighborhood arrest then you understand ? And the neighborhood they came out and they arrested them until the police came and that’s what happened because both of them were drunk, literally under the influence of alcohol.”
