Tragic End to Search: Missing Man Found Dead, Alleged Killer Shot

The search for missing man, Shane Baizar, ended in tragedy this morning. The 39-year-old’s decomposing body was discovered in a septic tank on his property in Bermudian Landing Village, Belize District. Baizar was reported missing on Sunday after his home was found open, and calls to his phone were unanswered.  Today, saw justice play a swift hand as the alleged killer was shot to death hours later.  Reporter Vejea Alvarez has the story.

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Tonight a father of two and his alleged killed are dead after a search for the missing man ended up in tragedy and manhunt for his perpetrator led to a shoot out. On Thursday evening 39-year-old Shane Baeza vanished from his home in Bermudan Landing Village. His family says they arrived at the home on Saturday and found Baeza had left the two story building open and was not answering his phone.

Williams, Friend of Baizar: So Saturday morning my cousin came and he was like ‘I thought Shane was here because I just left from landing and Shane’s whole house is open and a can of pain open.’ So I was like “What ? Shane would have never ever be so irresponsible and left his spot open with a can of paint open.” So we figured he was in a rush or something like that. So I said anyway I said I will make a post, this was Saturday, and I said I would post it on Facebook and maybe somebody will say “Oh we saw Shane in Placencia, we saw Shane in Corozal, we saw Shane somewhere.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Baizar had not been seen by anyone in the village and when a missing persons post yielded no results his family and friends mobilized to form a search party. The group spent almost a day and a half combing bushes near Baizar’s home but it was not until today his decomposing body was found in a septic tank on his property.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “This morning the police went back into the area of Bermudian Landing and they found a shallow grave and inside that shallow grave the decomposed body of Mr.Baizar was found.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Baizar’s close friend who only identified herself as Williams found one of his rings covered in blood yesterday and says that she knew her friend had been killed.

Williams, Friend of Baizar: “Yesterday when we came they id the search yesterday , this is after the police left, this is after forensic left and I walked to the edge of Shane’s yard and my foot touched Shane’s ring. His ring was on the ground and his ring had blood on it. I was like “Oh my God maybe my family is trying to show me a sign.” the sign was “I am here fam don’t stop looking for me.. I’m right here.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Did he ever mention if he had any problems with anyone or if he felt any type of way ?

Williams, Friend of Baizar: “Tuesday Shane was at my house because like I told you that is how I know Shane was missing because Shane stays at my house. Tuesday Shane told me something that stuck with me. He said “Fam, I have somebody at my house.” he said “I don’t really want them there but I don’t want to tell them they have to go either.” but he never said a name or nothing to me. That’s all he said to me. “I have somebody at my house, I don’t want them there you know but I don’t know how to tell them to go either.” I don’t know how to put it into words like I don’t know if he was trying to tell me.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: And that person was Cruz Catillo, a career criminal who had been hiding out in a bushy area on Baizar’s property. The crook allegedly stabbed Baizar to death and fled to his home village of Cotton Tree where Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says he was shot by cops.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “And upon seeing the police he took out a 9mm pistol and upon doing so the police returned fire, didn’t wait for him to shoot the police acted in defense of themselves knowing the history of Mr.Castillo and he was fatally shot by the police.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Any idea why Mr.Castillo would have wanted to kill Mr.Baizar ? We understand that he may have been hiding out at his residence ?

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “From what we gathered is that Mr.Castillo used to work for Mr.Baizar and he knew that Mr.Baizar had gone to the bank to do a withdrawal and he had asked Mr.Baizar for some money and Baizar gave him $20 and told him to leave and not to return. That seems to have aggravated him and based on that he eventually did what he did to Mr.Baizar.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: And while Baizar’s friends says that Shane’s kind heart may have been his downfall she believes that it’s his willingness to always lend a helping hand left memories in the minds of many.

Williams, Baizar’s Friend: “Shane’s circle was too big and everybody knew Shane. The community could tell you about Shane. If you’re hungry Shane would feed you. If you need somewhere to say Shane would make you stay and I just felt like that was his downfall you understand me because in this time and age you can’t trust anybody. So that is what I feel like Shane slipped down because he just had a big heart and he was caring and he felt like whoever it is needed somewhere to stay and didn’t have anywhere to stay and he opened his spot not knowing that this would have happened.”
