A Transport Department officer has been criminally charged by police for allegedly extorting the wife of a cop in the South. On Wednesday, 34-year-old Diaris Tepas reported to police that she was driving a Chevrolet Equinox without valid insurance and was stopped at a checkpoint on Savannah Road and informed of the offense committed. She says that the officers then informed her that if she paid 500 dollars she would have been allowed to leave. Tepas then agreed and later informed her husband of the incident. ACP, Hilberto Romero, says a sting operation was then set in place that result in the arrest of Andrea Peters.

Hilberto Romero, Senior Superintendent of Police:  “She reported that when her vehicle was checked it was found out that the vehicle was not insured and as a result she was told that she was going to be charged. However one of the transport officers then informed her that if she paid $500 that she would be released and not charged. Arrangements were made and a part of the payment was made. Police responded, they apprehended the three transport officers and after investigation was conducted one Andrew Peters, Belizean Transport Officer of Pomona Village was charged for the crime of extortion. Whenever these incidents happen we respond if they are reported. So yes she made a report, it was followed up and that is where we intercepted the persons and one person was charged for extortion.”
