Treasury Department Clerk Pleads Guilty to Stealing Over $90,000

A Treasury Department clerk charged with stealing over ninety thousand dollars from the Government of Belize pleaded guilty this week. Forty-six-year-old June Belisle appeared in the High Court of Belize Yesterday before Justice Nigel Pilgrim. In the presence of her attorney, Ronell Gonzalez, she pleaded guilty to a single count of theft. Belisle’s twenty-five-thousand-dollar bail was extended, and her sentence hearing was set for November 28. She was charged with stealing nine one thousand six hundred thirty-eight dollars and fifty-eight cents between October 2019 and October 2020. Belisle had run a scheme with six people, all single mothers, where she told them they were part of a government assistance program. She fraudulently entered the women into the government smart stream as teachers, and had a monthly salary entered into the system. Belisle then instructed them to return a portion of the money to her. In a caution statement given to police, Belisle confessed and explained she only did it because she was going through financial difficulty at the time.
