Trial Begins for Rodman Welch in Shakeem Dennison Murder Case

Three years after the fatal shooting of Shakeem Dennison, thirty-seven-year-old Rodman Welch is standing trial for his murder. Welch appeared in the High court of Belize today before Justice Nigel Pilgrim, represented by attorney Orson Elrington. The prosecution is being handled by Crown Counsel Riis Cattouse. The trial has gone into a vois dire (a trial within a trial) as the defense is challenging the admissibility of an alleged caution statement the accused gave to police where he incriminated himself. Justice Pilgrim ordered written submissions to be delivered on Monday, October 16, and he will hear oral submissions the following day. He has reserved his decision on the vois dire for October 30. Welch gave sworn testimony during the vois dire.
