Trial of Accused Murderers Begins Before Justice Lucas

The trial of two men, Ronlee Petillo and Matthew Smith, began today in the court of Justice Adolph Lucas with the only eye witness testifying. Petillo and Smith are charged with the murder of Miguel Rivera, who was shot and killed on March 11, 2011, at Finnegan Market, located on West Collet Canal Street. Rivera was a vendor at the market. The testimony of the eye witness has not yet been completed because the prosecution sought to make an application for a dock identification of Petillo and Petillo’s attorney, Anthony Sylvestre made submissions as to why the dock identification should not be allowed. The police identification parade that was held was ruled as improper so it could not be admitted as evidence. After hearing Sylvestre’s submissions, the Crown withdrew its application for the dock identification but informed the court that it still intends to make the application for the dock identification after the witness has completed his testimony. The trial has been adjourned until Monday, June 13. Smith is being represented by attorney Leeroy Banner. The Crown is being represented by Crown Counsels Janelle Tillett and Sherigne Rodriguez. They are being guided by Crown Counsel Shanice Lovell. The trial is without jury.
