Tropic Air Flight Lands in Belizean Waters

A Tropic International Plane crashed into the sea this evening. On board were three persons, the pilot, Denfield Borland, and passengers, Arthur Rogiers, an American national and Eddie Bodden, a Honduran National. Fortunately, all three survived the crash. We were told that the plane left the Phillip Goldson International Airport at 4:30 pm and was heading to the Roatan bay island in Honduras. On their way, something went wrong and the plane crashed in the sea in the area of Glover’s Reef and the Great Blue Hole. The three were rescued and late this evening we spoke to the Vice Commandant of the Belize Coast Guard, Commander Elton Bennett about the incident.

“The Coast Guard received information about 4:45. The information passed to us and we plotted the coordinates and it turned out to be 13 miles east of our patrol base out at the Turneffe Island or about 5 miles northwest of Halfmoon Caye. We learned that it was a Tropic Air plane with three persons on board. We immediately commenced the search and about 5 minutes past 5 this evening  the search unit from Halfmoon Caye located the three persons near the plane. The three persons were rescued and taken to HalfMoon Caye and are now being brought back to Belize City.”

“I know that it’s not perhaps in your purview but would you be able to tell us somehow what initial investigations are saying went wrong?”

“The three persons are still on a vessel; I have not been able to talk to them or get any details as yet. The rescue operation is still on going. When the marine casualty investigation comes up then we will look at the different causes of the accident and look at what went wrong. At this stage however we are still involved in a rescue operation.”

We will have more on this story in Wednesday’s newscast.
