According to the Friends for Conservation and Development, two Guatemalans have been under quarantine for the last 14 days at the Victor Galvez Quarantine Center after they were caught in the Chiquibul National Park on September 22.  31-year-old Eduardo Ramirez and 28-year-old Wilmer Guerra, both from Dolores, Peten, were found in the area north of Rio Blanco. They were handed over to authorities in San Ignacio on September 24. The Joint Forces Unit comprising of BDF soldiers, police officers, and FCD personnel intercepted the Guatemalans chopping to plant corn for Salvador Jimenez, a Guatemalan national who has been known to operate illegally inside the Chiquibul National Part for many years. A search was conducted on the men and on their immediate surroundings. The search yielded two live rounds, suspected cannabis, and a homemade firearm. The two men have been charged for the offence of kept prohibited firearm, kept ammunition without a gun license and possession of controlled drugs. There are still charges of illegal entry and clearing the forest for cultivation in the Chiquibul National Park pending. The area where these two Guatemalans were found is in dire need of persistent operations to dismantle Guatemalan investments before they come further into Belize and claim ownership of the land. The area in question has been used by the Jimenez family for cattle ranching since 2009.
