Two men charged for prohibited firearm and ammunition

On Monday evening, June 29, sometime around 5:55, based on intelligence received, the mobile interdiction team intercepted a green BBOC bus between mile 31 and 32 on the George Price Highway which was travelling from the direction of Belmopan en route to Belize City. A search was conducted on two Hispanic male persons for firearm offences. However nothing incriminating was found on them.  A search was then conducted on a black kit bag that was placed right behind them. The search led to the discovery of a black AK 47 rifle along with two magazines. Further search on the bag resulted in the discovery of a black plastic bag containing twenty five 7.62 live rounds, 52 nine millimeter live rounds, ten .38 live rounds and nineteen .45 caliber live rounds of ammunition. Further investigation lead to the detention of the two male persons on the bus. Both persons along with the firearm and ammunition were taken to the Belmopan Police station where their names were learnt to be 25 year old Ruben Avalos Martinez a Belizean construction worker of Alta Vista Village and 23 year old Guiermo Enriquez Salazar a Belizean fisherman of San Mateo, San Pedro Town. Both persons were charged with one count of kept prohibited firearm, one count of kept ammunition without a gun license and two counts of kept prohibited ammunition. They were both remanded to prison until September 30.”
