The quiet of Hopkins Village was broken this morning when it was discovered that two men were murdered in that area.  55-year-old Quentin Espinosa and 70-year-old Roland Burley, an American national were found with stab wounds and gunshout injuries.  The incident occurred at around nine thirty this morning near the village’s dump site.  Love News spoke with Espinosa’s girlfriend, Rosalinda Mas, who says the last time she spoke with him was around seven o’clock last night.

Rosalinda Mas, Girlfriend of Quentin Espinosa: “Last night he was at home but in the morning I have no idea of nothing. He was loving, caring, he was the kindest person.and he was a loving father.”

The murder rate has been low since the declaration of a State of Emergency(SoE) due to crime and subsequently to Covid-19.  Police Commissioner has credited the low murder rate to the hard work of the Belize Police Department.  Reference this case, the Police Commissoner says this double homicide may be the result of a land dispute.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: They initially found one body and it appeared to be that of a Caucasian person believed to be an American national and in searching the area in the bushes they came across the second body of one Quentin Espinosa who is from that area and he had what appeared to be gunshot wounds to the head. Police are still in the area combing preliminary information at this time suggests that there was some land issue apparently there was some surveying happening within the area and the owner of the land who appeared to be the Caucasian had some issue with some persons who were opposing the surveying and some threats were received but again nobody told the police of the threats and this is what I want to emphasize that in today’s day and age if you are receiving threats from anybody please don’t take it lightly report it to the police and let us see how we can intervene to prevent anything from occurring. It’s unfortunate that we did not know about the threats and the result is what was discovered today. Nonetheless we will do what needs to be done with a view to establish who are those persons who were sending the threats and to see if they have any connection whatsoever to the murders of the two individuals.”

Love News understands that Espinosa worked in the tourism industry.
