Three fatal road traffic accidents occurred over this past weekend. The first two were both in the Stann Creek District, on Friday night. The first victim, an elderly man was knocked off his bicycle. Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvett said the driver of the vehicle was trying to avoid the victim.
ACP Joseph Myvette, Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch: “On the Friday last sometime around 7:30pm Dangriga police were called to an area in Pomona Village where upon arrival they saw the body of a male person on the right hand side of the road when heading towards Dangriga and he was later identified as Samuel King, 80 years. Somewhere not too far from the body was a bicycle with extensive damage. What police learned so far is that one John Castillo of a Dangriga Town address was driving his black Toyota car towards the direction of Dangriga when upon him reaching Pomona Village a male person suddenly swerved onto the highway and as a result he swerved to the left in order not to hit the person and then the person turned back into his lane resulting in the accident. He was detained, a statement was recorded from him and he was served with a notice of intended prosecution pending the outcome of the investigation.”
Our Stann Creek correspondent, Harry Arzu, spoke to the chairlady of Pomona Village, who is also King’s goddaughter.
Melida Ingrahm, Charilady, Pomona Village: “Mr.Jeffery Williams went and told me that they had knocked down my Godfather Mr.Samuel King Sr. So when I arrived on the spot he was there in the drain laying down. He came from the Pomona Shopping center and was heading home, he went to buy some groceries.”
Reporter: You guys don’t know who might have done it, who might have hit him ?
Melida Ingrahm, Charilady, Pomona Village: “No. He used to work at Marie Sharp on the Melinda Road. He has two kids Samuel King Jr both of them are Samuel, one lives in Pomona and the other one lives in Libertad.”
The second accident occurred a few miles outside of Dangriga Town. ACP Joseph Myvett said the police are asking for the public’s assistance with this case.
ACP Joseph Myvette, Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch: “Later that same night Dangriga police also responded to a second fatal traffic accident between miles 3 and 4 on the Stann Creek Valley Road where upon arrival they saw the body of a male Hispanic in the middle of the highway. He was identified as Fidel Padilla, 62 years Honduran National with severe head and body injuries. On the side of the highway was a damaged blue bicycle. No one was in the area and also the vehicle which apparently knocked him down was not found in the area. So at this point in time we are seeking the public’s assistance in trying to locate that vehicle and driver in order to continue with our investigation in relation to this fatal traffic accident. At this point in time we do not have any leads.”
