Two Belize City men accused of killing Elwin “Bobo Youth” Lewis last year are heading to the High Court for trial. Travis Herbert and Robert Arnold appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court for a preliminary inquiry today. The Magistrate committed the men to stand trial in the June session of the High Court after considering the prosecution’s evidence. The evidence against them included as many as 10 witness statements, documents such as Lewis’s post-mortem report, and several DVDs. Both men were reminded they have one week to formally provide the court with a list of any alibi witnesses they intend to call. Herbert initially named three potential witnesses, including his sister. The charges stem from the shooting death of 43-year-old Elwin Lewis on March 22, 2024. Police reports state Lewis was riding his motorcycle on Antelope Street Extension when two men on another motorcycle reportedly rode up behind him and opened fire. Lewis was taken to the KHMH but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. Police say witness statements and surveillance footage linked Herbert to the incident. Before leaving the courtroom today, Arnold reportedly asked the Senior Magistrate about the process for obtaining bail in a murder case. He was informed that bail applications for such charges must be made to the High Court, typically with the help of an attorney. Bail was denied and both men were further remanded to the Belize Central Prison pending their next court appearance on June 10.
