A fisherman was shot at as he tried to steal a vessel belonging to the Belize Coast Guard. The incident occurred just after four o’clock this morning. Shots were heard in Belize City near the Belcan Bridge area after a trio of Coast Guard personnel observed two male persons working together in an attempt to steal the vessel. One of the suspects was towing away the boat and another was awaiting him in the area in another vessel. Lieutenant Thomas of the Belize Coast Guard spoke to our newsroom on the incident.
Lieutenant Thomas, Belize Coast Guard: “As per standard operating procedures the Coast Guard went through its use of force continuum policy which is the officer’s presence and the verbal command and consequences. In doing that the patrol was fired at. Immediately the patrol took cover and returned fire. There was an exchange of fire however there was no one injured during the exchange. The person in the vessel is the person who opened fire at the Coast Guard who then later fled the area. The second person in the water released the Coast Guard vessel and then surrendered. Coast Guard will continue to maintain our operation inside the Haul Over Creek and also the Belize City Harbor in an effort to support the Belize Police Department with the effort in crime fighting.”
The vessel was recovered and one of the suspects was detained pending an investigation.
