The president of the University of Belize, Professor Clement Sankat, issued a statement to the faculty and students of the school to address how they will move forward in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the university remains open, it is only for essential services. The school is embarking on moving towards more online interactions. Plenty of students and faculty are already using this method. Lecturers are required to contact students on how to use online modalities, as this method will be, quote, “stepped up.” The UB president is requesting that internet providers in Belize assist the students who are registered to have access to the internet at a reduced cost for the next three months. Those who do not have access to the internet, however, get the short end of the stick as the president is asking them to voluntarily withdraw from the courses that require access to the internet. He stated that this will be without any academic or financial penalty and such students can re-register for such courses at the very first opportunity they are next offered. Additionally, the director of finance is tasked with providing guidance to students on meeting their financial obligations. The summer semester is also cancelled, and the president is hopeful that Semester I of the new academic year of 2020-2021 will begin on August 1. Finally, the two graduation ceremonies carded for Belize City and Punta Gorda Town respectively scheduled for July are postponed to late October, tentatively.
